31 January 2023. Barnardos welcomes the proposals brought to cabinet today by Minister for Children Roderic O’Gorman to bring forward legislation designed to change the legal status of childminders. The move would make future regulation possible and allow for the National Childcare Scheme to be opened to more parents.
Sharon Byrne, Barnardos Early Years Development Manager said: “Plans to progress the registration of childminders will only help to improve the quality of childcare children receive across the country and provide greater safeguards around their care. At Barnardos we know childhood lasts a lifetime – research consistently shows that good quality childcare can minimise educational gaps for children and provide them with greater opportunities in the future.
“Additionally, it will have the potential to reduce childcare fees considerably for many parents who choose to use childminders, allowing them to benefit from the National Childcare Scheme. For low-income families this will help to alleviate some financial pressures.
“Increasing Tusla’s inspection and enforcement powers around non-compliance by early learning and childcare services will similarly only further child welfare safeguards and provide parents with better peace of mind about the care their children are receiving”.
